The making of a Madison original.
An idea. Two friends. And the creation of an institution.
While it’s common today to see a brew pub in cities across the country, that wasn’t the case in the mid-90s. But that’s when Eliot Butler and Rob LoBreglio, two college friends, set up shop on the corner of Doty Street in downtown Madison.
From there, they built the city’s first brew pub – one that we’re pretty proud to say has become a destination for our neighbors and visitors alike. With an obsession on service, hand-crafted food and brews, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, the Dane has continued to bring together friends and beers for more than 25 years.
It all starts with the beer. And food … and beer.
A home to craft beer before it was cool.
Our head brewmaster first traveled Europe and then honed his craft in California. Since cofounding the Dane, he’s led a team of brewers recognized nationally for their beers, ranging from our famous German Pilsner and Oktoberfest to an ever-changing rotation of specialty brews. We’re proud of our heritage but continue to push our creativity so there’s always something new for you to enjoy.
Food with a following.
Our menu is a mix of Wisconsin classics and internationally inspired dishes that have become staples at our Pubs. Start with our Old Glory Cheese Curds or Poutine, then grab Jaime’s Fish Tacos, Pub Burger or Chicken Pot Pie. No matter what you choose, you’ll see – or taste – that we take our food as seriously as our beer.
